In short

Every planet in every sign: 120 birth chart placements from Sun in Aries to Pluto in Pisces, each with strengths, challenges, love, career and the shadow side.

  • A planet alone in a hemisphere or making no aspects behaves loudly. Isolation amplifies.
  • Retrograde at birth turns a planet inward — slower to express, often more thoroughly worked.
  • The Sun is not the whole person. Chart readings improve immediately once the Moon and rising sign are added.
  • Note the fastest and slowest planets in your chart. The tension between them is usually the tension in your life.

The seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn — are simply the lights that move against the fixed stars, and every literate ancient culture tracked them. Babylonian astronomers had reliable tables by the seventh century BCE; the Greeks inherited them and attached the gods whose names the planets still carry.

Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, written in second-century Alexandria, gave each planet a nature, a set of dignities and a domain of life, and that scheme ran essentially unchanged for fourteen hundred years. The outer planets broke it open: Uranus in 1781, Neptune in 1846, Pluto in 1930, each arriving with a set of meanings drawn from the era that discovered it.

In a birth chart each planet answers one question. The sign it occupies says how it operates, the house says where, and the aspects it makes say what it has to negotiate with. Learning the ten planets well is the shortest route to reading a chart without a lookup table.

Questions Readers Ask

What do the ten planets mean in astrology?

The Sun is identity and purpose, the Moon feeling and need, Mercury thought and speech, Venus love and value, Mars drive and anger, Jupiter growth and belief, Saturn limit and discipline, Uranus disruption, Neptune imagination and dissolution, and Pluto power and transformation.

Which planets matter most in a birth chart?

The Sun, Moon and rising sign form the core, with Mercury, Venus and Mars filling in how you think, love and act. The outer planets matter mainly through the houses they occupy and the aspects they make.

What is a chart ruler?

The planet that rules your rising sign — Mars for Aries rising, Venus for Taurus rising, and so on. Its sign, house and condition colour the whole chart, which is why two people with the same Sun sign can read so differently.

What does it mean if a planet is retrograde in my chart?

That planet's function turns inward. It is typically expressed later, more privately and more deliberately than usual — often becoming a strength once the person stops comparing their pace to everyone else's.
