Häuser
Die Geomantie begann als ilm al-raml, die Wissenschaft des Sandes, die im 9. Jahrhundert in ganz Nordafrika und im Nahen Osten praktiziert wurde. Der Wahrsager zog Reihen von Strichen in Sand oder Staub, ohne sie zu zählen, und die Parität jeder Reihe – ungerade oder gerade – ergab die Figuren.
Sie gelangte im 12. Jahrhundert durch lateinische Übersetzungen aus dem Arabischen nach Europa und wurde für mehrere Jahrhunderte zur am weitesten verbreiteten Wahrsagekunst auf dem Kontinent nach der Astrologie. Ihr großer Vorteil war die Geschwindigkeit: Ein geomantisches Diagramm konnte in Minuten erstellt werden, während ein Horoskop Tabellen, Arithmetik und eine genaue Geburtszeit erforderte.
Das System ist für eine divinatorische Kunst ungewöhnlich rigoros. Sechzehn Figuren, von denen vier zufällig generiert und die übrigen durch strikte binäre Addition abgeleitet werden, ergeben einen einzigen Richter. Moderne Leser bemerken manchmal, dass die zugrunde liegende Mathematik eine einfache binäre Arithmetik ist, die Leibniz erst mehrere Jahrhunderte später als solche beschrieb.
