Das Deck ist nach Marie-Anne Lenormand benannt, der Pariser Kartenlegerin, die für Joséphine Bonaparte die Karten legte und so berühmt war, dass sie zweimal dafür verhaftet wurde. Sie selbst hat es jedoch nicht entworfen. Das 36-Karten-Petit Lenormand erschien nach ihrem Tod im Jahr 1843 und wurde von einem deutschen Gesellschaftsspiel aus dem Jahr 1799 namens „Das Spiel der Hoffnung“ adaptiert.
Dieser Ursprung erklärt den Charakter des Decks. Es war ein Brettspiel, bevor es ein Orakel wurde, daher zeigen die Bilder einfache Alltagsgegenstände: ein Haus, ein Schiff, ein Brief, ein Hund. Es gibt kein esoterisches Korrespondenzsystem und keinen Anspruch auf spirituelle Belehrung.
Stattdessen entwickelte sich eine Grammatik. Lenormandkarten werden in Kombination und nicht einzeln gelesen – eine Karte modifiziert die nächste, so wie ein Adjektiv ein Substantiv modifiziert – und ein vollständiges Grand Tableau aller sechsunddreißig Karten wird nach Entfernung, Blickrichtung und den Häusern gelesen, in die jede Karte fällt.
