Ogham ist zuallererst ein echtes Alphabet. Etwa vierhundert Inschriften sind auf stehenden Steinen in Irland, Wales und auf der Isle of Man erhalten, die meisten aus dem vierten bis sechsten Jahrhundert. Sie wurden als Kerben in den Rand der Steine geritzt und von unten nach oben gelesen.
Die Assoziationen zu Bäumen stammen aus einer späteren Manuskripttradition – den „Auraicept na n-Éces“ und den „Bríatharogam“-Glossaren. Diese ordnen jedem Buchstaben Kennings und oft auch einen Baum zu. Nicht jeder Buchstabe ist eindeutig einem Baum zuzuordnen; mehrere der traditionellen Glossen sind umstritten, und einige sind eher poetisch als botanisch.
Seine Verwendung als Orakel ist modern. Es gibt keine mittelalterlichen Belege dafür, dass Ogham zur Weissagung verwendet wurde. Die heutige Praxis wurde größtenteils im 20. Jahrhundert entwickelt und stützt sich auf Robert Graves’ „Die weiße Göttin“ sowie auf die keltische Wiederbelebung. Ehrlich betrachtet, ist es ein gut gemachtes modernes Orakel, das auf wirklich altem Material aufbaut.

Wie lese ich die Kerben?
Ogham wird entlang einer Mittellinie geschrieben, mit Gruppen von ein bis fünf Strichen darüber, darunter oder quer dazu. Jede Fünfergruppe bildet eine Aicme.
Ist der keltische Baumkalender authentisch?
Nein. Er wurde 1948 von Robert Graves konstruiert und hat keine mittelalterliche Grundlage, obwohl er seitdem weithin übernommen wurde.
Wie viele Fews gibt es?
Zwanzig im ursprünglichen Alphabet, mit fünf später in der Manuskripttradition hinzugefügten Forfeda. Dieses Orakel verwendet die ursprünglichen zwanzig.
Sollten Sie Entscheidungen auf Basis einer Ogham-Lesung treffen?
