La baraja lleva el nombre de Marie-Anne Lenormand, la cartomante parisina que le echó las cartas a Josefina Bonaparte y fue tan famosa que la arrestaron dos veces por ello. Ella no la diseñó. El Petit Lenormand de 36 cartas apareció tras su muerte en 1843, adaptado de un juego de salón alemán de 1799 llamado Das Spiel der Hoffnung (El Juego de la Esperanza).
Ese origen explica el carácter de la baraja. Era un juego de mesa antes de ser un oráculo, por lo que las imágenes son objetos domésticos sencillos: una casa, un barco, una carta, un perro. No hay un sistema de correspondencia esotérico subyacente ni ambición de instrucción espiritual.
Lo que se desarrolló en su lugar fue una gramática. Las cartas Lenormand se leen en combinación en lugar de individualmente —una carta modifica la siguiente como un adjetivo modifica a un sustantivo— y un Gran Tablero completo de las treinta y seis cartas se lee por distancia, dirección de la mirada y las casas en las que cae cada carta.
