Bazi — 'eight characters' — reads the year, month, day and hour of birth as four pillars, each with a heavenly stem and an earthly branch. The system reached its mature form in the Song dynasty under Xu Ziping, who made the day stem the self and read everything else in relation to it.
Where Western astrology reads planets, Bazi reads the balance of five elements across those eight characters, and the ten gods — relational roles produced by how each element treats the day master.
Bazi — 'eight characters' — reached its mature form in the Song dynasty with Xu Ziping, who shifted the reading from the year pillar to the day master, the heavenly stem of the birth day. That change is why the system is sometimes called Ziping astrology and why the day pillar, not the year animal, is the centre of a real reading.
The calendar underneath it is solar rather than lunar. The Bazi year turns at the start of spring in early February, not at Chinese New Year, which is why people born in late January are routinely assigned the wrong animal by popular articles.
