The solar return — a chart cast for the moment the Sun comes back to its natal degree — is a Persian technique, elaborated by Abu Ma'shar in the ninth century and transmitted into Latin Europe as the revolutio annorum. It treats each birthday as the opening of a self-contained year with its own weather.
