In short

Find your Chinese zodiac animal, ruling element and polarity, plus career, love, health and wealth profiles, lucky numbers and colours, and your forecast for the current lunar year.

  • Your own zodiac year — benming nian, every twelfth year — is traditionally a year of caution rather than celebration.
  • The clash pairs sit six apart on the wheel; friction there is proverbial rather than fatal.
  • Element cycles matter more than animals for timing: generation and control sequences drive the whole system.
  • Read the hour animal if you know your birth time. It describes what you are like when nobody is watching.

Elements

The twelve earthly branches, matched to twelve animals, structure the Chinese calendar and have done for over two millennia; the earliest animal correspondences appear on Qin dynasty bamboo slips from the third century BCE. Combined with the ten heavenly stems — five elements in yin and yang forms — they produce the sexagenary cycle of sixty years.

The animal of a birth year is only the surface of it. Traditional practice reads the animal of the year, month, day and hour together, and weighs the elements that each carries.
