Assigning number values to letters is an ancient practice: Hebrew gematria, Greek isopsephy and Arabic abjad all predate the common era, and all were used for interpretation as well as encoding. Modern name numerology uses a Pythagorean grid mapping A through I to one through nine and repeating.
The Chaldean alternative assigns different values and omits nine as sacred. Both circulate; the Pythagorean system is the standard in English-language practice and is what is used here.
Reducing letters to numbers is ancient: Hebrew gematria and Greek isopsephy both predate the Common Era, and both were used for exegesis long before anyone used them for personality. The Pythagorean 1–9 grid that Western name numerology relies on was assembled far later, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Because the modern system is keyed to the Latin alphabet, it is language-bound in a way its practitioners rarely admit. A name transliterated from Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese produces a different number depending on the spelling chosen — which is a good reason to treat the result as a mirror rather than a measurement.
