Reversals used
The deck is named after Marie-Anne Lenormand, the Parisian cartomancer who read for Josephine Bonaparte and was famous enough to be arrested twice for it. She did not design it. The 36-card Petit Lenormand appeared after her death in 1843, adapted from a German parlour game of 1799 called Das Spiel der Hoffnung — the Game of Hope.
That origin explains the character of the deck. It was a board game before it was an oracle, so the images are plain domestic objects: a house, a ship, a letter, a dog. There is no esoteric correspondence system underneath and no ambition towards spiritual instruction.
What developed instead was a grammar. Lenormand cards are read in combination rather than singly — one card modifies the next as an adjective modifies a noun — and a full Grand Tableau of all thirty-six cards is read by distance, direction of gaze and the houses each card falls in.

How is Lenormand different from tarot?

Why do the cards have playing-card pairs?
The deck descends from a game played with a piquet pack. Some readers use the insets for a second, cartomantic layer of meaning.
What is a Grand Tableau?
All thirty-six cards laid in a grid at once, read by houses, distances and lines. It is the traditional full reading and takes considerable practice.
