The idea that a reading should be anchored to a moment of birth is very old and was, for most of history, extremely difficult to use. Before clocks, birth times were recorded as watches of the night or by church bell; astrologers routinely 'rectified' a chart, adjusting the birth time backwards from known life events until the houses fitted. Whole treatises exist on the problem.
The three numbers stored here — date, time and place — are the same three that Hellenistic, Persian, Indian and Renaissance astrologers all demanded, because between them they fix the sky completely. Date gives the planets their signs, time gives the rising degree, and place gives the horizon those degrees are measured against.
Storing them once means every reading in the app can speak to your chart rather than to the average person: transits are calculated against your placements, compatibility uses your real Venus, and the daily forecast knows which house the moon is currently walking through.
