Transit astrology is the oldest form of prediction still in use. Mesopotamian scribes were not casting natal charts at all to begin with — they were watching the sky move over the state, noting which planet arrived where and what followed. The natal chart came later; the habit of comparing the current sky to a fixed reference point came first.
Hellenistic astrologers formalised the comparison. Once a birth chart existed as a permanent map, every subsequent planetary position could be measured against it, and the aspects between the moving sky and the fixed chart became the standard timing technique of the tradition alongside profections and directions.
Secondary progressions arrived much later and rest on a symbolic equation rather than a physical one: one day after birth stands for one year of life. It has no mechanism and makes no claim to one, but it produces a slow inner clock — a progressed Moon changing sign every two and a half years, a progressed Sun changing sign roughly every thirty — that many readers find describes the felt shape of a life better than transits alone.
