Instruction in the divinatory arts was, for most of its history, oral and jealously guarded. Golden Dawn initiates in the 1890s copied their tarot correspondences by hand and swore not to publish them; astrological technique passed from master to apprentice in Baghdad, Toledo and London in much the same way. The printed guide is a modern development, and it changed the crafts profoundly by making the argument public.
The first mass-market instruction books arrived in the 1970s occult revival, when Eden Gray's plain-spoken tarot manuals and Stephen Arroyo's psychological astrology took technique out of the lodge and into the paperback rack. They were criticised at the time for simplifying. They also produced two generations of competent readers, which the lodges never managed.
These guides sit in that tradition: opinionated, practical, willing to tell you when a technique is decorative rather than load-bearing, and written on the assumption that you would rather understand a method than memorise a table.
