Retrograde periods are famous for lost files and missed messages for the mundane reason that people are rushing. Take the ten minutes.
Re-, not new-
Every good retrograde verb starts with re: review, revise, rehearse, reconnect, repair, refund. Launches can wait three weeks.
Read the whole email
Most retrograde 'chaos' is a misread instruction. Slow reading is the entire remedy.
Let the old name resurface
People return during retrogrades. You are allowed to answer, and equally allowed not to.
Do not blame the sky for the calendar
A planet several hundred million miles away is not editing your inbox. The value of the period is the pause it gives you permission to take.

Planets truly reversing
Retrograde motion is the oldest problem in astronomy. Babylonian scribes tracked the stations of Mars and Jupiter on clay tablets, and the apparent backwards loops of the planets were what forced Greek astronomers into ever more elaborate systems of epicycles to keep the Earth at the centre.
Copernicus's real argument in 1543 was not mystical but economical: put the Sun at the centre and retrograde motion becomes a simple parallax effect, the visual result of a faster inner planet overtaking a slower outer one, the way a passing train appears to slide backwards.
Astrologically the symbolism survived the science intact. A planet appearing to reverse was read as its function turning inward or repeating itself — a period for review rather than initiation. Mercury retrograde became the popular emblem of the whole idea in the late twentieth century, largely because it happens three or four times a year and is easy to notice.
