The Elder Futhark is a twenty-four-character alphabet used across Germanic Europe from roughly the second to the eighth century, cut into stone, bone, metal and wood. Its inscriptions are overwhelmingly mundane — ownership marks, memorials, maker's names — with a minority of charms and curses.
Divinatory rune-casting as practised today is a twentieth-century reconstruction, built from Tacitus's brief account of Germanic lot-casting and the medieval rune poems that give each character a mnemonic verse. The letters are ancient; the method is modern and openly so.
