Retrograde Watch

Saturn · Neptune retrograde

Retrograde motion turns a planet's business inward. Revisit, review and repair what these bodies govern rather than launching anything new under them.

In short

The current moon phase and illumination, the sign every planet occupies today, and which planets are retrograde right now.

  • Waxing moons favour beginnings and accumulation; waning moons favour release, repair and endings.
  • The void-of-course Moon — after its last aspect, before it changes sign — is traditionally poor for launches and excellent for rest.
  • Track one planet for a full cycle. Understanding Venus's 584-day pattern teaches more than reading ten daily forecasts.
  • Go outside and actually find the body you are reading about. The practice changes when the sky stops being abstract.

Before almanacs, watching the sky was practical labour: the heliacal rising of Sirius announced the Nile flood, the Pleiades set the sowing calendar across three continents, and the Moon's phase decided when a fleet could sail. Astrology and astronomy separated only in the seventeenth century; for most of recorded history they were one discipline with two uses.

A daily sky report is the oldest form of the practice — not what the stars mean for your personality, but what the sky is actually doing right now, and what that has traditionally been used for.
