Divination about love is the oldest commercial application of the art, and the least reliable, because it is the domain where the querent most wants a particular answer. Every serious tradition warns about this: Hellenistic astrologers cautioned against reading for one's own marriage, and tarot manuals have said the same for three centuries.
A good love reading therefore does something narrower and more useful than prediction. It describes what each person is bringing, what is actually being negotiated, and which of the difficulties are structural rather than circumstantial.
Comparing two charts is medieval in origin — the tradition asked whether the luminaries of one nativity fell on the benefics of the other — but the modern relational reading owes far more to twentieth-century psychological astrology, which shifted the question from 'is this match fated' to 'what does this pairing keep doing'.
The three techniques in use today answer different questions. Synastry compares the two charts directly, the composite midpoint chart describes the relationship as an entity, and the Davison chart casts a real chart for the midpoint in time and space between two births.
Questions Readers Ask
Can a reading tell me if they will come back?
It can describe present conditions and their trend. Treat any confident prediction about another person's decisions with suspicion.
How often should I read on a relationship?
Monthly at most. More frequent reading tracks your anxiety rather than the relationship.
Is it wrong to read about someone without asking?
Many readers consider it a breach. A defensible compromise is to read only about your own side of the bond.
What matters most in synastry?
Moon contacts for daily comfort, Venus–Mars for attraction, Sun–Moon between the two charts for durability, and the house each person's planets fall into for the area of life affected.
Should we look at the composite chart too?
It is worth reading once the synastry is clear. The composite describes what the relationship becomes in the world, which is often quite different from how the two people feel privately.
