Four elements and three modalities generate the twelve signs. Learn these seven ideas and the zodiac stops being a list to memorise.

Aries · Leo · Sagittarius

Identity, faith and forward motion. Fire signs know before they can justify. Excess fire burns the fuel of others; absence of fire produces hesitancy and low self-belief.

Taurus · Virgo · Capricorn

Matter, time and consequence. Earth trusts what can be measured. Excess earth becomes inertia and materialism; absence of earth shows as chronic impracticality.

Gemini · Libra · Aquarius

Language, pattern and relation. Air needs to name a thing before it can feel it. Excess air detaches from the body; absence of air makes perspective hard to reach.

Memory, bonding and depth. Water knows by absorption. Excess water floods and loses its edges; absence of water reads emotion as an inconvenience.

Initiating modality. Begins seasons and projects; struggles with maintenance and with finishing.

Fixed

Taurus · Leo · Scorpio · Aquarius

Sustaining modality. Holds the middle of the season. Enormous endurance, matched by resistance to change.

Mutable

Gemini · Virgo · Sagittarius · Pisces

Adapting modality. Ends seasons, distributes and transitions. Flexible to the point of formlessness under stress.
