Where it comes from
Lapis is a rock rather than a mineral — lazurite with pyrite flecks and white calcite — and for six thousand years nearly all of it came from the Sar-i Sang mines in Badakhshan, Afghanistan. Ground and purified it became ultramarine, the pigment worth more than gold that Renaissance painters reserved for the Virgin's robe.
