Moonstone is an orthoclase feldspar whose blue sheen — adularescence — comes from light bouncing between alternating layers of two feldspars. Roman writers believed it was moonlight solidified, and it waxed and waned with the sky. Art Nouveau jewellers revived it wholesale, which is why so much antique moonstone is set in silver vine work.
