In short
Moon phases, the lunar calendar and working with the month rather than the day. Every lunar feature from the daily magazine, in eleven languages, with the free tools behind each one.
- Track the Moon's sign as well as its phase — a full moon in a water sign feels nothing like one in an air sign.
- Your natal Moon phase repeats monthly. Note which day of the cycle you consistently feel best.
- Keep the same notebook page for a whole lunation. The shape only becomes visible across the month.
- The eclipse months break the rhythm. Expect to lose one cycle in six to them and plan accordingly.

The eight phases as a working month
One lunation, read as a project cycle. This is the schedule most moon practices are quietly using.
| Phase | Days | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| New | 0-3 | Choosing one intention |
| Crescent | 3-7 | First small action |
| First quarter | 7-11 | Pushing through resistance |
| Gibbous | 11-14 | Refining, editing |
| Full | 14-18 | Reviewing results honestly |
| Disseminating | 18-22 | Sharing, teaching |
| Last quarter | 22-26 | Cutting what failed |
| Balsamic | 26-29.5 | Rest, no new starts |
The month is the moon. Every early calendar counted lunations before solar years took over for agriculture, and the eight-phase division still used in modern practice is a simplification of that older reckoning — new, crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full, disseminating, last quarter, balsamic.
Lunar features here treat the cycle as a scheduling tool. Twenty-nine and a half days is short enough to complete a project inside and long enough to have a shape, which is why moon-phase practice survives where more elaborate systems fall away.
Questions Readers Ask
How long is a lunar cycle?
About 29.5 days from new moon to new moon. That is the synodic month, which is why phase dates drift against the calendar.
What is my natal moon phase?
The angle between your Sun and Moon at birth, which places you in one of the eight phases. The birth chart tool reports it with the rest of your placements.
Should I do anything at a new moon?
Write one intention and leave it. The lunar practice works because it is small and repeated, not because the ritual is elaborate.
Are eclipses just dramatic full moons?
Mechanically yes, astrologically no. They fall near the nodes and traditionally mark endings that arrive faster than expected.
