In short

The twelve signs in depth — psychology, love, work and the shadow side. Every zodiac feature from the daily magazine, in eleven languages, with the free tools behind each one.

  • If a sign profile reads as unflattering, you are probably reading the unpractised version of it. Every sign has a mature expression and a young one.
  • Cusp birthdays are not a blend — the Sun is in one sign or the other. Calculate it rather than guessing from a date range.
  • Read the opposite sign as well. It holds the qualities yours outsources, and it explains a surprising amount of attraction.
  • Sun sign compatibility lists are the weakest tool in astrology. Use them for fun, then check the Moon and Venus contacts.

The twelve signs by element and modality

Element and modality generate most of a sign's temperament. Read across the row before reading any personality description.

Origins

The twelve-sign belt is Babylonian bookkeeping turned into character. Astronomers cut the ecliptic into twelve equal thirty-degree slices so planetary positions could be recorded without ambiguity; the personality descriptions were layered on centuries later by Hellenistic writers who matched each slice to an element, a season and a mode of behaviour.

Sign writing collapsed in the twentieth century into the horoscope column, which is why most people meet the zodiac as a stereotype. The features in this topic put the structure back: element, modality, ruling planet and seasonal position generate the temperament, and the stereotype is only the loudest corner of it.

The Method

  1. Read the element first

Fire, earth, air and water describe what a sign is made of. Half of any sign profile follows from its element alone.

  2. Add the modality

Cardinal starts, fixed sustains, mutable adapts. Element plus modality already narrows twelve signs to one.

  3. Check the ruler

The ruling planet sets the sign's motive. Where that planet sits in your own chart tells you how the sign actually behaves for you.

  4. Read your other placements

Your Moon sign profile is usually more recognisable than your Sun sign profile, because it describes private behaviour rather than public drive.

Practice Notes

  • If a sign profile reads as unflattering, you are probably reading the unpractised version of it. Every sign has a mature expression and a young one.
  • Cusp birthdays are not a blend — the Sun is in one sign or the other. Calculate it rather than guessing from a date range.
  • Read the opposite sign as well. It holds the qualities yours outsources, and it explains a surprising amount of attraction.
  • Sun sign compatibility lists are the weakest tool in astrology. Use them for fun, then check the Moon and Venus contacts.
  • Note which sign holds several of your planets — that stellium sign will overrule your Sun in daily life.

Myth & Truth

Commonly said

The precession of the equinoxes means everyone's sign is wrong.

In practice

Western astrology measures seasons, not constellations, and has done so knowingly since antiquity. Sidereal systems measure the stars; both are internally consistent.

Commonly said

There is a thirteenth sign.

In practice

Ophiuchus is a constellation the ecliptic passes through, not a zodiac sign. The zodiac is a twelvefold division of the year, not a star map.

Questions Readers Ask

What is the difference between my sun sign and my star sign?

Nothing — they are two names for the same thing, the sign the Sun occupied at your birth. The confusion comes from popular writing, not from astrology.

Why does my sign profile not sound like me?

Usually because the Rising and Moon are doing more visible work, or because your Sun's ruler sits in a very different sign. Run a full chart before deciding the profile is wrong.

Which sign features are published here?

All twelve get a long feature in rotation, covering psychology, love, work, shadow and the sign as a Moon and Rising placement rather than only as a Sun.

Can I get a daily reading for my sign?

Yes — the daily horoscope tool reads your sign against the current sky, and with saved birth data it reads your degrees rather than the sign generally.
