The twelve-sign belt is Babylonian bookkeeping turned into character. Astronomers cut the ecliptic into twelve equal thirty-degree slices so planetary positions could be recorded without ambiguity; the personality descriptions were layered on centuries later by Hellenistic writers who matched each slice to an element, a season and a mode of behaviour.
Sign writing collapsed in the twentieth century into the horoscope column, which is why most people meet the zodiac as a stereotype. The features in this topic put the structure back: element, modality, ruling planet and seasonal position generate the temperament, and the stereotype is only the loudest corner of it.
